How to Read Your Water Heater's Label (and Tell Its Age)

Everything you need to know about your water heater is on the label on the side of the tank: its size, fuel, rating and, hidden in the serial number, its age.

Where the label is

On the side of the tank, often near the gas control or the top. In a tight closet you may need a flashlight and a phone camera.

What it tells you

Capacity in gallons, fuel type (natural gas, propane or electric), the input rating and the model and serial numbers.

Decoding the age

Most makers code the month and year into the serial number. The maker's website explains the code; search the brand name plus "serial number age".

What the age means

Many tank heaters last about 8 to 12 years. If yours is past ten and showing rust, leaks or noise, start planning a replacement before it fails on a cold morning.

Size check

A 40-gallon tank may be too small for a large family. If you run out of hot water, the heater may simply be undersized.

Next steps

For repairs or a replacement quote, see water heaters.

Gas, propane or electric?

The label shows the fuel the heater was built for. A natural gas heater can't simply be switched to propane without a conversion kit fitted by a licensed plumber, and an electric model needs the right breaker and wiring. If you're moving from one fuel to another, the plumber will check the gas line size, venting or electrical supply first.

Relief valve

The temperature and pressure relief valve is on the side or top of the tank with a pipe running down. If it drips or has rust around it, mention it in your request.
