Plumbing on the edge of the Llano Estacado
Odessa is the seat of Ector County, with 114,428 people at the 2020 census, and together with Midland it anchors a combined area of about 359,000. The city sits on the southwestern edge of the Llano Estacado, right on top of the Permian Basin's oil and gas. Oil booms built the town in waves, so neighborhoods range from mid-century houses near downtown to new subdivisions on the edges. Most homes are on slabs, and a hidden line under the floor is a common repair; see slab leak repair.
Wind, heat and hard freezes
Odessa has a hot, semiarid climate: hot sunny summers, cool dry winters, rare snow and frequent high winds. The swing between day and night temperatures is large, and a winter cold front can drop temperatures fast. Pipes in exterior walls, attics and pump houses are the first to freeze. Our freeze protection guide covers what to do when a hard freeze is forecast.
